Grande Prairie History, The York Hotel
York Hotel to have Three Storeys With 48 Rooms, 24 P. Baths
Grande Prairie will shortly have a new three-story hotel, the
Hotel York. Excavation for this structure was made a year ago, but due to
shortages of material, nothing further was done. However, the material is
now available and construction will start as soon as weather permits.
The Hotel York will have forty-eight rooms, twenty-four of them
with private baths. All rooms will be sound proof and air conditioned,
equipped with buzzer telephones system and furnished in the latest style,
according to B.C. Straughan of Edmonton, who is now in Grande Prairie to manage
both the Grande Prairie (Hotel) and the new hotel.

The full concrete basement will contain combination sample and
banquet rooms, storage, boiler and laundry rooms.
The main floor will feature a modern combination dining room and
latest type of coffee bar with daylight kitchen as well as a spacious, well
appointed rotunda.
There will also be a tobacco and news stand, telephone booth and
writing room, as well as the managers office on this floor.
Two beverage rooms, one for men and the other for ladies and escorts,
complete the plan.
The two upper floors will each have 24 rooms, a writing room and
rest room. Space will be provided for an elevator which will be installed
a t later date.
The structure itself will be of reinforced concrete, stucco and brick.
The heating will be of the latest type. All lighting will be
indirect.

Straughan, C.L. Olsen, E.H. Logan and Frank Schroffel, all of Edmonton.
the latter is the contracting partner. Mr. Straughan has had over twenty
years experience in the hotel business in and aro0und Edmonton.
