Grande Prairie Hotels: The York Hotel

Grande Prairie is the undisputed regional center for north-western Alberta. It was not always so.
Prior to the 1950's Fort St. John, Beaverlodge, Dawson Creek, and Peace River were all positioning themselves to be the Peace Region's economic hub. Valleyview, Fairview and Spirit River were also in the running. Whitecourt did not have a good roads into the Peace Region--so it was not a contender.
Four major factors led to Grande Prairie's success:
Leadership--civic and business leaders that aggressively promoted our city in the 1950's.
Allies--our best friend, in this struggle, was a British Columbia government that neglected the Peace region, leaving the way open for Grande Prairie.
Infrastructure--the railroad went through Grande Prairie (and many of the other contenders as well).
Facilities--first and foremost, the York Hotel, which
made Grande Prairie the preferred destination for judges, politicians, and
business people. |
