The "Exotic Sedan" Book Project
At the moment I am collecting data for a book on
"exotic" four door sedans (or saloons as they are called in Europe).
Why such a venture? Historically, saloons have not had much appeal to collectors
and auto aficionados. Pony cars, muscle machines, convertibles, hardtops,
coupes and sportscars/roadsters have dominated the market place from glossy
coffee table books to calendars. Generally, they are perceived as less
elegant, less sexy and consequently not as much fun (although admittedly,
they are more user friendly, the preferred conveyance for families, taxi
operators, police departments, royality, heads of state CEOs and other
VIPs).
The 'large format' book I have in mind is devoted
to an appreciation of four door sedans that meet the following criteria:
1) Rarity - this almost automatically makes them
valuable and worth possessing. (Not, however, one - offs from manufacturers
or styling studies but motorcars genuinely designed and constructed for
public consumption even if it is the choice few).
2) Distinctiveness - not necessarily in terms of
styling, engineering, performance, innovation or construction but also
in terms of the history of the marque, its mystic, ambiance or notoriety
even. Importantly, this can include not only the good but the bad and the
ugly.
3) Modernity - the automobiles need to be contemporary
driving machines, ones that are suited for today's motoring environment.
Consequently, the autos that will be featured (the list is not finalized
yet) cover a thirty year period - roughly from 1960 to 1990.
The automobiles listed below to a greater or lesser
extent fit the criteria. One of my biggest problems encountered to date
is a lack of good quality photographs/illustrations for the marques selected.
Thus, if anyone out there has access to good quality photographs etc. on
one or more of these automobiles listed and would like to share them, I
would be most thankful. (Of course, all photographs etc. that are eventually
published would be gratefully acknowledged).
